There’s no doubt that ski season has arrived in Vermont. The snow is now covering what was just recently lush green lawn around the Store and the outside patio. We love seeing the familiar faces of old friends that return each winter. We couldn’t be more pleased to have old and new friends make their way through our doors to grab a cup of coffee or après ski fare after an awesome day on the slopes. The outstanding community feeling that we strive for at J.J. Hapgood adds such warmth during these cold winter months.
J. J. Hapgood General Store is nestled amongst amazing ski resorts: Bromley Mountain, Magic Mountain Ski Area and Stratton Mountain, as well as a Nordic ski center, Wild Wings. Each mountain or ski center provides locals and visitors with a different experience. Bromley Mountain is one of our favorites to visit with our kids—it’s not too surprising that it was just voted #3 in the East by SKI Magazine for Kid Friendly Activities. Magic Mountain is a classic, small, local ski area that has an incredible community feeling. It’s also home to some of the most challenging terrain; it’s a must-ski on a powder day. The biggest resort in our neck of the woods, Stratton Mountain has over 600 acres of skiing and snowboarding terrain. It has also garnered accolades from SKI Magazine; it’s rated in the Top 10 for snow, grooming, lifts, terrain parks, service and on-mountain food and dining. Wild Wings Ski Touring Center features beginner, intermediate and advance Nordic trails. Located about a mile and a half from the Store, it’s a great center for the first-time cross country skier. The owner, Tracy Black, also offers Yoga Classes at Wild Wings. A nice way to kick off a day on the trails.
J.J. Hapgood is a popular stop for folks who are heading up to the mountains or when they come off the slopes. We’ve made a few changes recently so that service is quicker and more items are easily accessible. To accommodate our customers during the busy ski season, we have added table service in addition to ordering at the counter. The grab-n-go case is also filled with favorite pre-packed deli foods like our famous Misty Knoll Farm Chicken Salad, Hummus, and salads, as well as packaged olives and delicious Vermont cheeses—Huntsman’s and Bûcheron cheeses are also back at the store.
There are plenty of new specialty food items in the store that will satisfy any sweet-tooth craving. Try the unbelievable Kayak Salty Oatmeal Cookies or an assortment of Lake Champlain Chocolates. Stay warm with a hip Skida Hat created by a student from Stratton Mountain School or sip on Hot Apple Cider from Sunrise Orchard apples. Skiers and riders can top off a day with friends with Putney Winery’s Putney Bubbly, sparkling fruit juices bursting with the extraordinary flavors of Vermont, or choose from our selection of Prosecco. We also have wine by the glass and beer on tap to enjoy by the pint or take home a growler!
Whether folks are in town to hit the slopes or returning to visit family and friends for the holidays, we are so delighted to see everyone walk in our doors because we know that winter’s here again!
