Diners craving a Vermonter will find it listed as the Plymouth Hunter on the J.J. Hapgood menu in the town of Peru. This take on the sandwich is made with arugula, caramelized onions, apple, Fox’s mustard and raw cow’s milk cheese on multigrain bread. Ham is optional.

Our BBQ Pulled Pork Pizza hit the Vermont Fresh Network’s top Ten Pizzas in Vermont!

“Historically, J.J. Hapgood has been the longest continuously running general store in Vermont. Owner Juliette Britton grew up in Peru and, with her husband Tim, revived the beloved grocery, eatery and community gathering space. They feature mouth-watering, wood-fired pizzas on their locally sourced menu. The BBQ Pulled Pork pie features Sugar Bob’s Smoked Maple Syrup, Plymouth Hunter Cheese, and Vermont-Grown Pork.”

J.J. Hapgood General Store is featured as one of the 21 Best Breakfast Sandwiches In The Country by Thrillist.com! As quoted in the article, “…there’s so much going on with their breakfast sandwich that they literally had to draw a diagram. Everything’s local, from the eggs to the sausage to the bacon to the cheddar, and you best believe they don’t skimp on produce like garden-fresh leafy greens. But the real star of the show is the homemade biscuit, which continues the homegrown theme by using flour, butter, and buttermilk all sourced in the Green Mountain State”.

Yahoo.com Food even picked up the story to shine a spotlight on the delicious delicacies of these top-tier breakfast sandwiches!

Sir Paul McCartney visits J.J. Hapgood General Store after a day of skiing at Bromley Mountain in Peru, Vermont!
J.J. Hapgood had the pleasure of welcoming music icon Paul McCartney on a snowy afternoon in late February. After spending the day hitting the slopes at Bromley Mountain, McCartney decided to stop by for a meal on his way out of town. The legendary former Beatle claims he was tipped off by another celebrity to the delicious, diverse and vegetarian-friendly menu.

After being joined by his wife, Nancy Shevell, and two other couples, the group spent about an hour in the dining room enjoying a quiet dinner. Paul asked about the store, its long-standing history and even autographed a menu! He ordered a margherita pizza and organic kale salad with a side of J.J’s famous red sauce.

JJ Hapgood Whisket Blog PR

JJ Hapgood was recently featured in a piece by world-renowned blogger and Basil Hayden’s ‘bourbon whiskey connoisseur’, Max Wastler. Wastler is a Chicago-based storyteller and shop-owner known for his appreciation of America, its people, its places, and in particular its handmade things. Wastler visited the general store and eatery to check in with Juliette and see how things were progressing now that she and Tim had over a year under their belts-

“The main thing is: the people love it. All the feedback we receive refers to our warm vibe. And I’m so happy we’ve been able to build a place that will have a major impact on the kids that come in here. In the same way I reflect on my childhood here and remember how much this place meant to me as a kid, I think kids will come to appreciate what this place has meant to them over the course of their lives.”

J.J. Hapgood is officially known worldwide! The Norwegian Broadcasting Corporation aired a piece on the store in early March. Juliette, Tim and their family were happy to host U.S. Correspondent Tove Bjorgaas and his team during their time in Vermont. They talked Hapgood history, offering nutritious/local food options and the close-knit Peru community. Thanks to the news team at NRK for reaching out and traveling all the way to the Green Mountain State to visit J.J. in this neck of the woods!

With over 1.2 million YouTube views, AppleComedy and it’s creator- Willy Appleman, are steadily making a name for themselves in the world of online humor. Appelman is a comedian based in NYC. He hails from the Green Mountains of Vermont and is a graduate of Skidmore College. He recently worked as a Producer for The San Francisco Improv Festival and has worked behind the scenes for HBO, The Colbert Report, TBS, Sesame Street, Comedy Central and The Huffington Post.

J.J. Hapgood was one of the chosen locations for Applegate’s latest video, “How to Talk to Clouds”. We’re not entirely positive what it’s about… but we can say that ‘Gregor Ross’ sure is enjoying his J.J. Hapgood hot chocolate!
